A weighted grade calculator helps you determine your final course grade when different assignments or categories have different levels of importance. Enter your grade for each category (homework, tests, projects, etc.) along with its weight percentage. The calculator will compute your overall weighted grade and convert it to a letter grade.
Your weighted grade is calculated by multiplying each category grade by its weight percentage, then summing all the results. All category weights must add up to 100%.
Weighted Grade = (Grade₁ × Weight₁) + (Grade₂ × Weight₂) + ... + (Gradeₙ × Weightₙ)
Where weights are expressed as decimals:
Example: 30% = 0.30, 50% = 0.50
The sum of all weights must equal 100% (or 1.0 in decimal form) for an accurate calculation.
Course with four categories:
Weighted Grade = (85 × 0.20) + (90 × 0.25) + (78 × 0.25) + (88 × 0.30)
= 17 + 22.5 + 19.5 + 26.4 = 85.4%
Final Grade: B
Course with participation and projects:
Weighted Grade = (95 × 0.10) + (89 × 0.20) + (85 × 0.30) + (81.5 × 0.40)
= 9.5 + 17.8 + 25.5 + 32.6 = 85.4%
Final Grade: B
Course with heavy exam weighting:
Weighted Grade = (92 × 0.15) + (88 × 0.15) + (85 × 0.30) + (90 × 0.40)
= 13.8 + 13.2 + 25.5 + 36 = 88.5%
Final Grade: B+
Different courses use different weighting structures. Here are some common examples:
Category weights represent how much each type of assignment contributes to your final grade. A higher weight means that category has more impact on your overall grade.
High Weight (30-50%)
Major exams, final projects, or comprehensive assessments that significantly impact your grade.
Medium Weight (15-30%)
Regular tests, quizzes, or substantial assignments that moderately affect your grade.
Low Weight (5-15%)
Homework, participation, or minor assignments that have smaller impact on your final grade.
Always refer to your course syllabus for the exact weight distribution. Professors may use different weighting systems than standard structures.
Focus more study time on categories with higher weights, as they have the greatest impact on your final grade. A few points on a heavily weighted exam matters more than many points on low-weight homework.
Use this calculator regularly throughout the semester to monitor your standing and identify areas where you need improvement before final exams.
Use the calculator to determine what grades you need on remaining assignments to achieve your target final grade.
