Calculate your high school GPA with weighted and unweighted options. Enter your courses, grades, and course types (Regular, Honors, AP/IB) to get accurate GPA calculations.
High school GPA can be calculated in two ways: unweighted and weighted. An unweighted GPA treats all courses equally on a 4.0 scale, while a weighted GPA gives extra points to advanced courses like Honors, AP (Advanced Placement), and IB (International Baccalaureate) classes, typically using a 5.0 scale. Weighted GPAs better reflect the rigor of your course load and are often preferred by competitive colleges.
The formula for calculating high school GPA is:
GPA = (Sum of Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours
Grade Point Values:
Regular Courses (4.0 scale)
Honors Courses (4.5 scale)
AP/IB Courses (5.0 scale)
Student's courses and grades:
Weighted GPA = (4.0×1 + 3.5×1 + 5.0×1 + 3.0×1 + 4.0×1 + 4.0×0.5) / 5.5
Weighted GPA = 21.5 / 5.5 = 3.91
Unweighted GPA = (4.0×1 + 3.0×1 + 4.0×1 + 3.0×1 + 4.0×1 + 4.0×0.5) / 5.5
Unweighted GPA = 20.0 / 5.5 = 3.64
All courses are treated equally regardless of difficulty. Maximum possible GPA is 4.0.
Best for: Comparing students across different schools with varying course offerings.
Advanced courses receive bonus points. Maximum possible GPA can exceed 4.0, often reaching 5.0 or higher.
Best for: Recognizing students who challenge themselves with rigorous coursework.
Regular Courses
Standard high school courses with no additional weighting. Graded on a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0 points.
Honors Courses
Accelerated courses with more challenging content than regular classes. Typically receive +0.5 bonus points, making an A worth 4.5 points.
AP (Advanced Placement) Courses
College-level courses offered in high school with standardized exams. Receive +1.0 bonus points, making an A worth 5.0 points.
IB (International Baccalaureate) Courses
Internationally recognized rigorous curriculum. Weighted the same as AP courses with +1.0 bonus points.
