Calculate percentage difference between two values. Compare numbers and find their relative difference.
Percentage difference is used to compare two values when neither is considered the "original" or "reference" value. Unlike percentage increase or decrease, which use one value as the base, percentage difference uses the average of both values as the denominator.
Percentage Difference = |Value 1 - Value 2| / ((Value 1 + Value 2) / 2) × 100
Comparing experimental results with theoretical values, or comparing measurements from different instruments or methods where neither is considered the "true" value.
Comparing two sample means or data sets where neither is a baseline, such as comparing test scores between two groups or performance metrics between two time periods.
Comparing measurements from two different batches, production runs, or quality standards where you want to know the relative difference without designating one as the reference.
Comparing metrics like sales figures, website traffic, or productivity between two equal entities such as two stores, two websites, or two teams.
| Aspect | Percentage Difference | Percentage Change |
|---|---|---|
| Base Value | Average of both values | Original (old) value |
| Use Case | Comparing two equal values | Measuring change over time |
| Result | Always positive | Can be positive or negative |
| Example | Comparing two test scores | Price increase/decrease |
Percentage difference is symmetric - the result is the same regardless of which value you call "Value 1" or "Value 2". This makes it ideal for comparing two equal entities.
Because we use absolute difference, the result is always positive. This focuses on the magnitude of difference rather than direction of change.
By using the average as the base, percentage difference provides a relative comparison that's proportional to the magnitude of the values being compared.
When the average of two values is zero (e.g., -5 and 5), percentage difference is undefined because division by zero is not possible.
