Wallpaper rolls come in standard sizes that vary by region. American single rolls typically measure 20.5 inches wide by 16.5 feet long, covering approximately 28 square feet. European rolls are usually 21 inches wide by 33 feet long, covering about 57 square feet. Most wallpaper is sold in double or triple roll bolts to reduce waste from pattern matching.
Pattern type significantly affects material requirements. Straight match patterns align horizontally and require 10-15% extra for matching. Drop match (half-drop) patterns repeat diagonally with each strip offset, requiring 15-20% extra material. Random match patterns have no specific alignment and need only 5-10% extra for general waste and trimming.
Pattern repeat distance determines how much material is wasted per strip. Larger repeats create more waste because you must align the pattern at the ceiling line, potentially discarding significant portions of each strip. Small repeats (under 6 inches) are more economical than large repeats (over 24 inches).
Accurate measurements are essential for ordering the correct amount. Measure each wall's width and height separately, as dimensions can vary. For width, measure at the top, middle, and bottom of the wall, using the longest measurement. For height, measure from floor to ceiling or to your desired endpoint, adding 4-6 inches for trimming allowance.
When measuring around obstacles, include the full wall dimensions rather than trying to calculate around each feature. Only deduct large openings like doors and picture windows. Small windows, outlets, and switches should remain in your total area calculation as the material around them is typically wasted during installation.
Order all rolls from the same dye lot to ensure color consistency. Dye lots can vary between production runs, creating visible color differences on your walls. Purchase 1-2 extra rolls beyond your calculated needs for future repairs, as matching the exact pattern and color later may be impossible.
Wall preparation affects both installation quality and material usage. Remove old wallpaper completely and repair any wall damage before starting. Apply primer or sizing to create a uniform surface that helps adhesive bond properly. Smooth, well-prepared walls require less adhesive and show patterns more clearly than rough or damaged surfaces.
