Calculate XP and trading cards needed to reach your target Steam level
Your Steam level is a measure of your activity and engagement on the platform. Each level requires progressively more XP, which you earn primarily by crafting badges from trading card sets. Higher levels unlock additional friend slots, showcase slots, and demonstrate your dedication to the Steam community.
The XP requirement increases every 10 levels, making higher levels significantly more expensive and time-consuming to achieve. Strategic planning and smart card purchasing can help minimize costs while maximizing your level progression.
| Level Range | XP per Level | Total XP for Range | Badges Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-10 | 100 XP | 1,000 XP | 10 |
| 10-20 | 200 XP | 2,000 XP | 20 |
| 20-30 | 300 XP | 3,000 XP | 30 |
| 30-40 | 400 XP | 4,000 XP | 40 |
| 40-50 | 500 XP | 5,000 XP | 50 |
| 50-60 | 600 XP | 6,000 XP | 60 |
Most Steam games with trading cards drop half of their set while playing. You'll need to trade or purchase the remaining cards from the Community Market. Each complete set can be crafted into a badge that awards 100 XP, plus emoticons and profile backgrounds.
Regular game badges can be leveled up to 5 times, with each level requiring another complete card set. Event badges and special badges may have different leveling rules. Foil badges are separate and also award 100 XP but require foil cards which are more expensive.
Card prices vary significantly between games. Popular games often have cheaper cards due to higher supply. Use third-party tools to find the cheapest card sets, and consider buying during major Steam sales when card prices typically drop due to increased market activity.
Focus on games with the cheapest complete sets. Many older or less popular games have card sets available for $0.30-$0.50 total. This method is slower but most cost-effective for reaching moderate levels.
Best for: Levels 0-50, budget-conscious users
Buy cards in bulk from games you own to maximize card drops. Craft badges from games you've played to get emoticons and backgrounds you might actually use. Balance cost with personal preference.
Best for: Levels 20-100, balanced approach
Purchase complete card sets or use automated buying tools. Focus on speed over cost. Consider buying during off-peak hours when competition is lower. This method is expensive but fastest for high-level goals.
